Blood Shed Theater Presents: Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Dir: Dario Argento, 1998)
In the late 90s Dario Argento gave us an adaptation of Leroux's gothic tale unlike any before. His Phantom (here played with exquisite vigor by the much missed Julian Sands) has a deformity which is mental and emotional rather than physical. You see, this Phantom was, quite literally, raised by rats, which makes it rather hard for him to relate to women. Imagine if Jareth from Labyrinth was friends with rodents instead of muppets. Tight pants are the least of his problems.

This is an absolutely insane example of what happens when Giallo tries to redefine itself during the modern era, and things go completely off the rails. There are surrealist interludes worthy of Ken Russell at the height of his power, gore which will delight even the most hardned teenaged rental enthusist, and one of the most perfect interludes in cinema, which I think about at least once a week, and never fails to make smile, honestly. Without giving too much away, I will just say this: Rat Car.

Please join us in the microcinema to bask in the wonder that is Argento's Phantom. You haven't seen anything like this, we promise.

***Wine and Cheese Pairing will be available from our friends next door at Tigress, to really get you in the spirit of the thing!!
