Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)

Celebrating spooky season with a juggernaut of J-Horror, Ju-On: The Grudge is the second feature length installment and first theatrical release of Takashi Shimizu’s expansive and iconic Ju-On series. Widely considered its most essential chapter, Ju-On: The Grudge is chock-full of the franchise’s most culturally enduring images, from “hand come out of head in shower” to “scary lady face appear under sheets”. And, needless to say, plenty of glottal stopping and pasty little ghost boys.

Told in disorienting non-chronological order that keeps you guessing every step of the way, Ju-On: The Grudge centers on Rika Nishina, a social worker sent on assignment to a house that is, unbeknownst to her, extremely, extremely haunted. As more and more people who step foot inside the house wind up dead, Rika and her co-horts set out to uncover the gruesome past of the vengeful spirit, Kayako, who resides within its walls alongside her son, Toshio. Unfortunately for our heroes, it doesn’t quite seem like there’s anything on this Earth that could possibly stop Kayako’s deadly wrath once you encroach on her territory.
