Bloodshed Theater Presents: Blood Feast (1963)

October is here. The leaves are changing, the candy is flowing and the monsters are happy in their haunts. We can think of no better time for BLOOD FEAST (1963). Brilliant, unassailable and undeniably comforting, this is the first ‘gore’ movie, and the first entry in the new genre of GORE-NOGRAPHY from our collective father-figure Herschell Gordon Lewis.

This beautiful little film also happens to be the genesis of everything this series is founded on. The set-up is simple: A suburban mother asks an obvious murder man within a mystical storefront if he can prepare an Egyptian feast for her nubile virgin daughter's 16th birthday. He does a creepy wink and some of the finest eyebrow work ever committed to film, assures her he's TOTALLY not going to murder a bunch of people and harvest their body parts, and we're off to the races. If you thought people were too trusting in the 70s, then just wait till you see what they were like in the 60s. The wonders that follow are absolutely beautiful. No one does cops talking in offices better than Lewis. No one understands that joy. Or blood the wrong red. No one makes you feel like this - this strange wonder at carnage, oddly happy and in awe at the transition from nudity to violence as the new American frontier of the forbidden.
